ABOUT THE FILM
The aim of the project was to gather artists to collectively explore and learn about Korean culture, sharing their skills, knowledge and experiences to culminate in a multicultural creative collaborative work. This documentary is a presentation of their collective efforts, as well as some of the thoughts with which they approached the question of ‘Koreanness’. A core ideal of this project was ‘hongik-ingan’ (홍익인간), which is the original founding philosophy of Korea, meaning ‘broadly benefitting the human race’. It is about offering one’s unique qualities in co-operation with others’ uniqueness, not for one’s own personal advancement but for the benefit of something greater than oneself. This can be seen as an ideology where we use our differences and individuality for the benefit of others, rather than as causes for friction and hostility. If hongik-ingan can be seen as a core part of what it means to be Korean, then what truly defines ‘Koreanness’ might be this dedication of one’s individuality to help and understand others, regardless of one’s nation, ethnicity, class or gender. We hope that this documentary will encourage enthusiasts from around the world to delve deeper into the richness of Korean culture while helping Korean citizens to better recognise the value of their cultural heritage so that both Koreans and non-Koreans can share their values, cultures and aspirations to broadly benefit the human race.
이 다큐멘터리의 목표는 한국문화에 대해 전반적으로 탐구하고 배우려는 예술가들을 모아 서로의 기술, 지식, 경험 등을 공유함으로써 다문화적인 창조적 공동 작업을 이루어내는 것이다. 이 다큐멘터리는 그들의 공동 노력을 보여주는 프리젠테이션이며 또한 '한국다움'에 대한 질문에 접근하여 얻은 그들의 생각을 담은 것이다. 이 프로젝트의 중심 사상은 '널리 세상을 이롭게 한다'는 뜻을 가진 한국의 독창적인 건국이념인 '홍익인간'이다. 이 정신은, 자기 자신의 입신을 위해서가 아니라 자신 보다 큰 어떤 것의 유익을 위해 다른 사람의 독창성과 협력하여 개인이 가진 독특한 소양을 제공해 주는 것이다. 우리의 '다름'과 개성이 알력이나 적대감을 조장하는 대신 다른 사람들의 유익을 위해서 쓰여질 때 이 정신이 드러나게 된다. 만일 '홍익인간'이 한국인이 되는 핵심 부분의 하나로 인식될 수 있다면 '한국다움'의 진정한 규정은 아마도 개인의 국가, 민족성, 계급, 성별에 상관없이 다른사람들을 돕고 이해하려는 한 사람의 독창적 봉사가 될 것이다. 우리는 이 프로젝트가 세계 여러 곳에서 온 열정적인 사람들이 한국문화의 부요함을 더 깊이 탐구하도록 격려하고 한국 국민들이 한국 문화유산의 가치를 더 잘 인식하는 데 도움이 되기를 바란다. 그렇게 함으로써 한국인과 비한국인 모두가 서로의 가치, 문화, 염원들을 '널리 세상을 이롭게 하기 위해' 공유할 수 있게 되기를 기대한다.
